2 Koi Karp
tapes, skreaks, muzak, magick...

2 Koi Karp create worlds using sound, installation, film, costume as instrument and performance. 2 Koi Karp explore the social and transcendence; from childhood play and anxiety; to fetishism and pain; mundanity and the ecstatic.

Childish things; children’s voices, primary colours, glitter, toy instruments, lullabies and playroom aesthetics meet intense, psychotic/psychedelic states with howls, snarls, screaks of old tapes and records and eroticised, brutal action. These seeming oppositions are ingrained within the ‘fabric’ of our society and they are to be exorcised through revelation if they are to be seen as they really are; in a Naked Lunch ritual of sound, action and vision. Sexuality and gender is ambiguous, celebrated and questioned in all its forms and guises between sight, smell, sound, taste and touch. Tangible and familiar, yet simultaneously unhomely and fractured.

2 Koi Karp’s inception, the first live performance with newly acquired tape players was at a residency in Ibiza with Islington Mill at an event curated by Video Jam. 2 Koi Karp are now associated artists at Video Jam and this has led to collaborations with filmmaker Graeme Cole and New York art/party collective Cheryl. 2 Koi Karp will be playing on the Video Jam stage at Fat Out Fest in May 2014 as well as collaborating with the legendary Charles Hayward.

2 Koi Karp have recently been artists-in-residence at The Penthouse NQ, artist-led live/residency space, as well as being invited to perform at Be Live and Noise Above Noise. These projects have been vital in the development in visual/performative and sonic terms for 2 Koi Karp and has led to collaborations with a range of artists such as Ian Moss (The Hamsters), Gary Fisher and Matt Dalby, Rosanne Robertson and video artist KHOM. The Penthouse also invited 2 Koi Karp to play at Sluice Art Fair to represent the space in Bermondsey, London.

DEVI Presents:Break OutA collaborative Installation & Performance by Woodcock&Grundstrom with Neil Francis, and KHOMFilms Screening by Helen Shanahan and Josefin Arnell21st August:Installation & Screening open from 7-10pmPerformance 8-9pmThe installation will be open 4-8pm from 22nd August-25th August (by appointment from 25th August-2nd September) The space is open to anyone to interact with physically and sonically.Break OutWoodcock&Grundstrom are known from their interactive installations at Queer monthly club event, Bollox where they gave away jewellery and creating a Tunnel of Delights for clubbers to explore and exploit. Their giant doughnuts at The Party Monster Alt Pride event caused quite a stir. They play with ideas about the body and gender, queerness and meaning and question what is art and where can/should it be engaged with? This will be the artists first collaborative performance and will explore the relationship between body and space, clothing and our environment. There will be a tangle where we will be wrapped and bound creating pulses of sound from the material we are living in and breaking out of. The artists will ‘wear’ and ‘play’ the room, there will be no separation between body and environment. “We usually follow these things for their meanings are inscribed in their forms, their uses, their trajectories. This is possible to break out from. Working in a collaborative state we transform into insects helping each other to build shelters on our bodies with the materials we have gathered (referencing the case-making caddiesfly larvae - the larvae use silk to make protective cases/shelters of gravel, sand, twigs or other debris for its pupation). We attach contact mics to the different parts of the sheltered bodies and let our bodies sing and hum.” Robert Grundstrom.Organic chaos and geometric repetition appear in the form of objects, light and sound. There will be live projections by KHOM (collaborator with Gnod, Gum Takes Tooth, 2 Koi Karp), sound from the room/objects and tapes manipulated by Neil Francis (2 Koi Karp, Terminal Cheesecake, Gnod). The installation will be open 4-8pm from 22nd August-25th August (by appointment from 25th August-2nd September) The space is open to anyone to interact with physically and sonically.https://www.facebook.com/WoodcockGrundstromhttp://khom1.tumblr.com/http://louisewoodcock.tumblr.com/http://2koikarp.tumblr.com/Part of QUEER WE ARE: A 5 Day Festival of Queer and Alternative Culture.https://www.facebook.com/QRCHSTR?ref=streamhttps://www.facebook.com/events/393920914079817https://www.facebook.com/events/1446349015645146/?ref_dashboard_filter=upcomingDEVI are a new artist-led group based in the Northern Quarter of Manchester.
